NOTE
The gray scale signal is composed of ten levels of brightness, including black and
white. Therefore the traditional "ten step" scale actually is composed of nine
risers, and eight shades of gray between the extremes. Existing standards and
common practice call for a linear gray scale test signal (one with all steps of equal
amplitude). The signal provides a nominal 50% APL (Average Picture Level),
representative of "typical" television scenes.
